The Black Heart

A much-loved live-music pub tucked just off Camden High Street, the Black Heart has been a heartbeat of London's rock, punk and metal underground since 2009. Formerly a sports pub, the Greenland Place venue was reborn as a Camden institution, pairing a lively ground-floor bar with an intimate gig room upstairs. The upstairs space holds around a hundred and fifty people and is prized for its low stage, punchy in-house sound and strong sightlines, putting audiences within inches of the action. That close-up intimacy has made it a trusted stop for festivals such as Desertfest London and Camden Rocks, and a reliable place to catch rising talent before it moves on to bigger stages. Downstairs, the bar trades on a rock and goth atmosphere, rotating craft beers, a solid whisky selection and a wall of posters charting the many bands that have passed through. A kitchen serving food through the week and a selection of beers from the local Signature Brew brewery add to the appeal for both gig-goers and casual visitors. As a strictly over-eighteens venue, the Black Heart hosts gigs, album-launch nights and regular promoter takeovers such as Chaos Theory's monthly Face Melter, championing up-and-coming as well as established underground acts. Its fiercely independent spirit and dedicated following have made it one of the capital's most cherished small music venues. Set on Greenland Place a short walk from Camden Town Underground and Camden Market, it sits at the centre of one of London's most famous music districts. Combining a characterful rock pub with a tiny but mighty upstairs stage, the Black Heart remains a vital part of Camden's live-music landscape. The combination of a rock and goth ground-floor bar, a tiny but ferocious upstairs stage and a fiercely independent booking policy has made it a beloved fixture of the Camden scene, championing underground acts year after year. For metal, punk and stoner-rock fans in particular, it remains an essential stop just off the High Street.
