A Southampton institution in the student-heavy Bevois Valley district, the Hobbit is a multi-level pub and late-night live music venue rolled into one. Originally the Portswood Hotel and shown on nineteenth-century maps, it was renamed after Tolkien's novel in 1989 and has since become one of the city's best-known nightspots, popular with students and like-minded locals who pack it out most nights of the week. The split-level building holds two bars, a pool table upstairs and a large paved beer garden several floors below street level, giving the place a warren-like character all of its own. Real ale, cocktails and a kitchen running everything from pub food to Caribbean barbecue keep the daytime trade ticking, while the bare-brick walls and lively atmosphere come into their own as the evening builds. By night it transforms into a late-night venue, with entry charges applying after a certain hour. Live music is central to its identity, and the downstairs room has hosted countless gigs, including the long-running Messtival charity festival that brought touring and local metal, hardcore and pop-punk bands to the venue between 2010 and 2016. Themed club nights, DJ sets and tribute shows round out a packed and varied calendar that keeps the crowd coming back. The Hobbit gained national attention in 2012 when it faced a trademark dispute over its name, prompting a public campaign backed by actors Stephen Fry and Ian McKellen, who offered to help cover the cost of a licence. The episode only deepened local affection for the pub, which weathered later pressures including rising business rates and a major renovation in 2021 to emerge as popular as ever. Dog-friendly, with disabled access at the front and upstairs and a famously sociable garden for summer events, the Hobbit balances its roles as neighbourhood local and gig venue with ease. For generations of Southampton students it has been a rite of passage, and its blend of cheap drinks, live music and Tolkien-tinged character keeps it firmly at the centre of the Bevois Valley scene.
