The Priory

One of Aberdeen's most famous nightspots, the Priory occupies a striking hundred-and-fifty-year-old former Congregational Church on Belmont Street, the traditional heart of the city's nightlife. Its distinctive twin spires, said to be influenced by Lund Cathedral, make it an unmistakable landmark, and the building was converted into a nightclub at the turn of the millennium after a hard-fought planning battle with the council. Closed for three years, the venue reopened in spring 2026 under DJ and promoter Grant Leslie, who also runs the nearby Prohibition. The refurbishment kept the building's dramatic church features, including its stained-glass windows, while reframing the concept as more than just a nightclub. Leslie describes it as a bar with entertainment, hosting live music and tribute acts alongside DJ sets, aimed at a broad, multi-generational crowd. The Priory remains best known for its flaming Purple Rain cocktails, a signature that has survived its various incarnations and become part of its identity. With a capacity of around nine hundred, the reopened venue programmes dance nights spanning techno, house, drum and bass, indie and alternative, as well as daytime events and student-oriented parties, and offers a relaxed, friendly atmosphere with heaters at the bar and fairy lights overhead. Its return was warmly received, with the soft launch and opening night drawing crowds eager for both nostalgia and a fresh experience. Reviewers have noted a welcoming, sing-along vibe and affordable drinks, positioning the Priory as a place where different generations can enjoy a night out without the intensity found in some other clubs, a deliberate point of difference in a changing nightlife market. Set among the bars and clubs of Belmont Street, the Priory is part of a wider effort to bring buzz back to the area, with its owner arguing that a busy street lifts every venue on it. Combining a remarkable historic setting, a famous cocktail and a flexible entertainment offer, it has reclaimed its place as a cornerstone of Aberdeen's after-dark scene.
