Aberdeen Music Hall

One of Scotland's most cherished concert halls, the Music Hall stands proudly on Union Street in the granite heart of Aberdeen, its grand classical frontage a landmark of the city centre. Designed by the architect Archibald Simpson and opened in 1822 as the Assembly Rooms, the building has welcomed audiences for two centuries and counts a young Charles Dickens among the many notable figures to have appeared on its stage. The centrepiece is its magnificent main auditorium, a galleried hall renowned for its acoustics and capable of holding well over a thousand people for seated concerts and around two thousand standing. Beneath an ornate ceiling and ringed by Corinthian columns, the room hosts everything from classical recitals and orchestral performances to rock, pop and folk gigs, comedy and spoken-word events, making it the city's flagship space for live performance. A major redevelopment completed in 2018 carefully restored the historic fabric while adding modern facilities, including new performance and creative-learning spaces, improved access and refreshed front-of-house areas. The work balanced conservation with contemporary needs, ensuring the venue could continue to serve a broad public while honouring its place in Aberdeen's architectural and cultural heritage. Run by the charity Aberdeen Performing Arts, which also operates His Majesty's Theatre and the Lemon Tree, the Music Hall sits at the centre of the city's cultural life and its busy programme of touring shows. Its prominent Union Street location places it within easy reach of shops, restaurants and transport links, making it a focal point for nights out in the city. With its blend of nineteenth-century grandeur, sensitively modernised facilities and a wide-ranging calendar, the Music Hall remains a defining cultural institution in the north-east of Scotland. Two hundred years after it first opened its doors, it continues to bring world-class music and entertainment to Aberdeen audiences in one of the finest rooms in the country.
