Emerson Colonial Theatre

The oldest continuously operating theatre in Boston, the Emerson Colonial Theatre on Boylston Street has been a centrepiece of the city's Theater District since it opened in 1900. Renowned for its sumptuous Gilded Age interior of gold leaf, marble and ornate plasterwork, the theatre has hosted countless landmark productions over more than a century and holds a storied place in American theatrical history as a celebrated pre-Broadway tryout house. The auditorium seats around seventeen hundred people across orchestra, balcony and gallery levels, combining grandeur with intimacy in a classic proscenium layout. Its opulent decoration and excellent sightlines have made it a favourite among performers and audiences alike, and the room's scale is well suited to large touring musicals and plays while retaining the warmth of a traditional theatre. Its history is bound up with the development of American musical theatre. The Colonial famously hosted the world premieres and out-of-town tryouts of numerous classic shows on their way to Broadway, and its stage has welcomed legendary performers across generations. Now part of Emerson College and operated in partnership with a major presenter, it continues that tradition with a programme of touring productions and special events. Its location in the Theater District places it amid a dense cluster of historic venues, restaurants and the bustle of central Boston, close to the Common and well served by the city's transit network. That central, walkable setting makes the theatre easy to reach and a natural part of a night out in one of the country's great theatre cities. By preserving a magnificent turn-of-the-century playhouse in active use, the Emerson Colonial Theatre offers audiences a direct link to the golden age of American theatre. Its blend of Gilded Age splendour, a storied history and a programme of major touring productions keeps it among Boston's most treasured cultural landmarks.
