One of the most revered concert venues in Britain, O2 Academy Brixton is a grand former cinema in south London that has become a byword for the perfect mid-sized music hall. Opened in 1929 as the Astoria and converted to a music venue in the 1980s, the Grade II listed building is celebrated for its sloping floor, its ornate interior and an atmosphere that has made it a favourite of artists and audiences alike across decades of memorable shows. The venue holds just under five thousand people, with a famously raked floor that ensures a clear view of the stage from almost anywhere in the room. Its lavish interior, modelled on a Mediterranean garden with an elaborate proscenium, lends shows a sense of grandeur, and the combination of scale, sightlines and acoustics has earned it repeated recognition as one of the best live-music venues in the world. Programming spans the full breadth of contemporary music, from rock, indie and metal to hip-hop, electronic and pop, hosting major touring artists and landmark one-off events. Countless celebrated concerts and live recordings have taken place on its stage, and a date at Brixton has long been regarded as a milestone for artists, cementing the venue's status as a rite of passage on the touring circuit. Its location in Brixton places it in a vibrant, diverse district of south London, directly opposite the Underground and rail stations and amid the bars, restaurants and markets that give the area its lively character. That central, well-connected setting makes the venue easy to reach from across the capital and a natural hub for music fans on a night out. By pairing a magnificent former cinema with an unrivalled reputation for atmosphere, O2 Academy Brixton stands among the most cherished concert venues in the country. Its blend of a grand raked hall, a storied history and a programme of major shows keeps it a favourite destination for live music in London.
