Teatro SOGEM Wilberto Cantón

Run by Mexico's general society of writers, the SOGEM, the Teatro Wilberto Canton occupies the organisation's headquarters at Jose Maria Velasco 59 in the San Jose Insurgentes neighbourhood of Mexico City. Founded on 13 April 1983 and named in honour of the dramatist Wilberto Canton, it was conceived as a stage closely tied to the country's playwriting community. The Italian-style house seats around 345, and over the decades it has built a reputation as one of the capital's leading comedy theatres while maintaining a broad and varied bill. Its programming spans classic and contemporary drama, comedies, musicals and children's shows, with productions of works by Mexican and international playwrights filling a busy weekly calendar. Beyond staging plays, the theatre plays an active part in artistic training and the development of new talent, organising workshops and courses in areas such as acting and direction in keeping with the SOGEM's wider mission. The building has been refreshed through periodic renovations, with a significant update around 2010 keeping its facilities in good order, and it offers amenities including a box office, confectionery stand and parking. As part of the SOGEM's network of cultural spaces across the city, the Teatro Wilberto Canton has become an emblematic venue in the capital's theatrical life, valued for the range and accessibility of its offer. Its combination of a writers' guild pedigree, a comfortable mid-sized auditorium and a packed schedule has made it a dependable fixture for audiences in the Benito Juarez borough. The SOGEM, Mexico's general society of writers, maintains a network of cultural spaces across the city, and the Wilberto Canton theatre is the stage at its Benito Juarez headquarters, complemented by other rooms such as the Foro Rodolfo Usigli and the Teatro Enrique Lizalde at the society's Coyoacan cultural centre. The auditorium's programming runs heavily to comedy but takes in drama, horror, parody, musicals and family shows across a packed weekly bill, with several productions often in rotation at once. Periodic refurbishment, most significantly around 2010, has kept the house comfortable and well-equipped, and its emphasis on accessible ticket prices has helped sustain a loyal audience over four decades.
