Teatro Varsovia

Designed by the celebrated architect Mario Pani in 1959 but never used as a theatre for more than six decades, the Teatro Varsovia is one of the more unusual stages in Mexico City. Pani conceived the room on the ground floor of the Varsovia building, at Varsovia 9 in the Zona Rosa, as an amenity for residents and neighbours of the Colonia Juarez, but it served only as a hall for union assemblies and never functioned as a working playhouse. Its theatrical life began only recently. The director, choreographer and producer Rodrigo Gonzalez came across the building and discovered the long-dormant Pani auditorium beneath it; together with his partner Raul Tamez he decided to give the space a second life. After restoration, the Teatro Varsovia opened to the public on 3 March 2022, finally fulfilling the function its architect had drawn more than sixty years earlier. The intimate Italian-style house seats around 180 and serves as the home of La Infinita Compania, the company Gonzalez and Tamez created for the venue, known for choreographic works built from operatic and literary sources such as Madama Butterfly and adaptations staged previously at major Mexican stages. The programme also embraces dance, drama, comedy, cabaret, music and opera. A few steps from the Angel of Independence and well connected by Metro and Metrobus, the theatre has carved out a niche as a small, design-led space in the heart of the city. Bringing a piece of Mario Pani's mid-century architecture into active cultural use, the Teatro Varsovia adds a distinctive venue to the capital's independent scene. La Infinita Compania, the resident troupe, is known for adapting operatic and literary sources into dance-theatre, with works such as Madama Butterfly, a Bach Passion and the Victorian tale Teleny among the productions it has staged here and at venues including the Helenico and Chapultepec Castle. The venue keeps a cafe but no parking of its own, relying on a public lot nearby, and is easily reached by the Metrobus stop at the Angel and the Sevilla Metro station. Box office hours run Wednesday to Sunday in the late afternoon, and the programme mixes the company's signature pieces with visiting drama, music and family shows in a deliberately intimate setting just off the Paseo de la Reforma.
