The Arts at Marble Arch

Conceived as an ambitious stop-gap rather than a permanent fixture, The Arts at Marble Arch is a semi-permanent theatre built to keep the programme of London's Arts Theatre alive while that West End house undergoes major refurbishment. Rather than simply going dark for a year or more, the venture's creators chose to open a much larger replacement in a far more prominent setting, between Oxford Street and Park Lane, close to the landmark Marble Arch itself. The project was conceived by Louis Hartshorn and Brian Hook, custodians of the Arts Theatre, a 353-seat West End venue that first opened in 1927 and is now closed for works. Their temporary home is a considerably bigger 550-seat house, designed by Reed Watts architects and built by OSMO Projects, with a sweeping grandstand, a 17-metre-wide stage and modern technical facilities intended to carry the Arts' creative output into its hundredth year. Set to open in summer 2026 and expected to remain in place for at least two years, the venue launched with a programme leaning heavily towards musical theatre. Early productions included a return for the cult favourite Heathers the Musical and a run of the stage adaptation Burlesque, alongside family-oriented shows, with the operators promising a mixture of new productions and established hits. Its position gives it an unusual character, creating a destination for live entertainment in public space between two of the capital's busiest thoroughfares and beside one of England's most recognisable monuments. The building is a striking modern addition to Theatreland, deliberately temporary in nature yet substantial in scale and ambition. For all that it is a pop-up, the venue is run as a fully fledged theatre, with a box office, accessibility provision and a West End-style operation. By transplanting and enlarging an established theatre's identity into a new location, The Arts at Marble Arch offers a rare example of a historic playhouse keeping its work in front of audiences even as its permanent home is rebuilt.
