A soaring 40-foot arched ceiling, original to the building's days as a funeral chapel, gives The Chapel its name and its drama. The venue occupies a 1914 structure on Valencia Street in San Francisco's Mission District that began life as the Gantner-Maison-Domergue Funeral Home; the high-ceilinged, open-beamed room where bands now perform was the mortuary's chapel, and the wider building later served for years as a campus of the New College of California. Restaurateur Jack Knowles bought the defunct, Tudor-style building and gutted it, uncovering dark wood beams, columns and mouldings that he restored, then paired the low lighting and scarlet walls with the dramatic ceiling to create a room that is both intimate and theatrical. The Chapel opened in autumn 2012, with an early lineup that featured Elvis Costello, and a sister restaurant, The Vestry, occupies the rest of the building with a patio out back. With a capacity of around 500 across the main floor and a mezzanine, the room offers strong sight lines from almost anywhere and acoustics flattered by its volume. California design publications have named it among the most beautiful venues in the state, and staff cheerfully maintain that the former mortuary is haunted, a story that has attached itself to the building. Primarily booked by the promoter Britt Govea of the boutique outfit known for destination-driven shows, The Chapel leans towards indie rock, folk and Americana, with forays into jazz and experimental music and residencies by artists such as Peter Murphy and the avant-garde players John Zorn and Bill Laswell. It also champions local acts, booking them as openers and hosting showcases. Surviving the pandemic, which hit independent music venues especially hard, the room marked its tenth anniversary in 2022 with a stacked series of shows and continues to operate as a cornerstone of independent live music in the Mission, a striking conversion that turned a century-old mortuary into one of the city's most distinctive concert spaces.
