The Masquerade - Heaven

Heaven is the largest of the three afterlife-themed rooms that give the Masquerade its identity, the biggest stage in one of the most distinctively designed independent music venues in the country. With a capacity in the region of 1,500, it handles the venue's bigger touring bookings, while its companion rooms, Hell and Purgatory, take progressively smaller shows, a tiered arrangement that has defined the Masquerade since its earliest days. The Masquerade was established in 1989 and spent 27 years in the historic DuPre Excelsior Mill, a century-old former manufacturing plant on North Avenue in the Old Fourth Ward, where Heaven, Hell and Purgatory were originally arranged quite literally on different levels of the mill. Across its history the venue has presented a roll call of alternative-music royalty, from Nirvana, Nine Inch Nails, Radiohead and Fugazi to later acts such as Odesza, Death Grips and Taking Back Sunday. When a booming real-estate market pushed the venue out of the Old Fourth Ward, it relocated in 2016 to Kenny's Alley at the lower level of Underground Atlanta in downtown, where it rebuilt its three signature rooms around a large brick open-air courtyard. The move was an adjustment for fans, but the venue recreated the multi-stage format that had always set it apart. Heaven anchors that layout, hosting the headliners and the larger general-admission crowds in a room sized for established acts and rising names alike. The surrounding courtyard links the three stages into a single complex, a short walk from the State Capitol, Georgia State University and Centennial Olympic Park. Independently owned and run, the Masquerade has long credited its local ownership for its staying power, and it has only grown busier downtown, presenting hundreds of shows a year across its stages, with a fourth room, Altar, added in 2024. As its principal room, Heaven remains the focal point of a venue that has shaped Atlanta's alternative scene for more than three decades.
