The Masquerade - Hell

Hell is the mid-sized room among the Masquerade's trio of afterlife-themed stages, sitting between the larger Heaven and the smaller Purgatory in one of the country's most distinctively designed independent music venues. Holding several hundred people, it takes mid-level touring bookings and has long been a proving ground for acts on their way up, a key rung on the ladder the venue's tiered rooms create. The Masquerade was founded in 1989 and spent 27 years in the historic DuPre Excelsior Mill, a former manufacturing plant on North Avenue in the Old Fourth Ward, where the three rooms were arranged on different levels of the old building so that Heaven, Hell and Purgatory were almost literal. Over the decades its stages have hosted a remarkable span of artists, from Nirvana, Nine Inch Nails and Fugazi to Future, In This Moment and Little Dragon. A surging real-estate market eventually forced the venue out of the Old Fourth Ward, and in 2016 it moved to Kenny's Alley on the lower level of Underground Atlanta downtown, rebuilding Heaven, Hell and Purgatory around a large brick open-air courtyard. It took a while for the Masquerade to settle into its new home, but the relocation preserved the multi-room model that defines it. Hell remains central to that model, a room scaled for the punk, metal, indie, electronic and hip-hop acts that form the heart of the venue's programming, close enough to the crowd to deliver the sweaty intensity the Masquerade is known for. The surrounding courtyard ties it to the other stages within a single downtown complex. Independently owned, the Masquerade attributes its longevity to local control, and downtown it has grown busier than ever, promoting hundreds of shows annually across its rooms, with a fourth space, Altar, added in 2024. As the connective middle tier, Hell keeps the venue's pipeline of emerging and established talent flowing through a scene the Masquerade has helped define for more than thirty years.
