Rising on the site of a opera house destroyed by fire, the Orpheum Theatre opened on 19 November 1928 at the corner of South Main and Beale streets in downtown Memphis. Built for around 1.6 million dollars to designs by the renowned Chicago theatre architects C.W. and George L. Rapp, it replaced the earlier Grand Opera House, which had stood on the spot from 1890 until flames consumed it in 1923, and it opened twice the size of its predecessor. The new Orpheum was a lavish vaudeville and movie palace, fitted with gold and silver leaf, marble, crystal chandeliers, a gilded dome and a Mighty Wurlitzer organ, and seating around 2,800. In its early years it presented organ recitals, vaudeville and films, and its stage welcomed performers of the calibre of Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and Eddie Cantor. Like many such palaces it endured lean decades, operating for years under the name Malco and at one point penciled in as a potential site for a utility company office building amid downtown redevelopment. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977, and the Memphis Development Foundation undertook restorations that brought it back as a performing-arts house. A major renovation in the 1980s restored the theatre to its 1928 opulence while modernising it, and a later round of work upgraded restrooms, dressing rooms, climate control and backstage facilities to accommodate touring Broadway productions. Subsequent seating adjustments to improve comfort and legroom settled the capacity at around 2,308. Today the Orpheum, together with the adjacent Halloran Centre, forms the community-supported nonprofit Orpheum Theatre Group, which operates the venues and runs education programmes. Presenting touring Broadway shows, concerts and classic-film screenings, the restored vaudeville palace remains a centrepiece of downtown Memphis and a survivor of the city's lost theatre district.
