Built as Hope Park Chapel in the 1820s, the neoclassical building on Clerk Street that is now Edinburgh's Queen's Hall began life as a place of worship. Designed by architect Robert Brown and completed around 1824, it served as a church, later known as Newington and St Leonard's Parish Church, for over 150 years until the congregation departed in 1976. Its closure coincided with a search by several Scottish ensembles, including the bodies that became the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and the Scottish Ensemble, for a permanent performance and rehearsal base. An appeal launched in 1977 raised the funds needed to convert the church, the work carried out by Larry Rolland of Robert Hurd and Partners, and the new Queen's Hall was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II on 6 July 1979. The conversion preserved much of the building's character, including two large eighteenth-century boards displaying the Lord's Prayer, the Creed and the Ten Commandments, and the hall has been a Category A listed building since 1970. It can hold up to 900 standing or around 801 seated, with three dressing rooms, a green room and a production office supporting performers. A flexible, intimate room, the Queen's Hall has hosted a wide range of artists over the decades, from Nina Simone and Nick Cave to Adele, and it estimates it welcomes around 90,000 visitors across some 200 concerts a year. It holds a distinctive place in the city's festival calendar as the only major venue to stage events for the Edinburgh International Festival, the Fringe and the Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival alike. That combination of a historic listed interior, a versatile mid-sized capacity and a central role across Edinburgh's festivals has made the Queen's Hall one of Scotland's best-loved concert spaces. From classical recitals to jazz, folk and contemporary gigs, the former chapel has spent more than four decades as a working music venue without losing the atmosphere of its origins.
