The Rebel Lounge

Where the Mason Jar once stood, the Rebel Lounge now carries on a rock-and-roll tradition that has run through the same building on Indian School Road for decades. The Mason Jar opened on the site in 1979 and became one of central Phoenix's premier clubs, a quintessential 1980s rock room that hosted acts on their way to stardom, from Rage Against the Machine, Tool and Jane's Addiction to Green Day, Guns N' Roses and Nirvana, and later the Black Keys, Fall Out Boy and Jimmy Eat World. After the Mason Jar closed in 2005, the space passed through a few other incarnations before the local promoter Stephen Chilton of Psyko Steve Presents and his partner Chuckie Duff bought the building in 2014, renovated it and reopened it as the Rebel Lounge the following year. The pair were determined to forge a new identity while honouring the room's heritage, taking the new name from the surf-rock classic Rebel Rouser by Arizona-raised guitarist Duane Eddy. The roughly 300-capacity room quickly re-established itself as a fixture of the Phoenix scene, booking tomorrow's acts before they break and running popular recurring events such as an emo night. Its history is part of the appeal: the owners have both embraced and gently mocked the building's past, selling koozies that joke about the Mason Jar while building their own legacy. Recognition followed, with the Phoenix New Times naming it best punk club, best rock club and best rebooted venue, and Billboard naming it the best venue under 500 capacity in a 2024 list. The room sits in a building locals note has hosted entertainment for longer than rock and roll has existed, an old structure with a walk-in fridge and decades of stories. Marking ten years as the Rebel Lounge in 2025 with a month-long anniversary series featuring Arizona favourites, the venue has settled into its role as a small, independent room with an outsized history. It remains a place where, as its owners like to say, a fan might one day boast of having seen a future star early, just as earlier generations did at the Mason Jar.
