The Workmans Club

For 115 years the home of the City of Dublin Working Men's Club, the building at 10 Wellington Quay on the edge of Temple Bar has spent its second life as one of the capital's leading live-entertainment venues. The club occupied the site from 1888 until 2003, providing music, theatre, a concert hall, a library and a billiard room for the city's brewers, dockers, drovers and tradesmen, before the premises were sold and the working men's club moved elsewhere. The Georgian building, which had stood on the quay for well over a century, was acquired by interests linked to the neighbouring Clarence Hotel and reopened in 2010 as The Workman's Club, a multi-floor music and events venue beside the river. Its old-school decor and original features were preserved as focal points on each floor, lending the place a distinctive, lived-in character. Built around a simple mission to give musicians and independent thinkers a space, the venue hosts everything from rock gigs and intimate acoustic sets to comedy, book readings, club nights and themed markets. The main room holds around 300 and has earned praise from performers, with members of Royal Blood and Muse among those to have lauded its atmosphere and sight lines, and acts such as Fontaines D.C., Kodaline, Future Islands and Father John Misty have played there. In October 2021 the operators opened a second performance space, the Workman's Club Cellar, directly beneath the main venue, fitting it with a new stage, a spacious green room, a high-end sound system and two bars to hold upwards of 170 people. Together with a roof terrace and several bars, the additions effectively doubled the venue's live-music capacity. A winner of an Irish live-music venue of the year award, the Workman's Club has become a haven for independent expression in the heart of Dublin, mixing headline gigs with club, comedy and showcase nights. Its blend of a historic riverside building and a broad, music-led programme has kept it central to the city's nightlife since its reopening.
