Troubadour Canary Wharf Theatre
click to managePurpose-built in the round to stage the world premiere of a stage adaptation of The Hunger Games, the Troubadour Canary Wharf Theatre is a striking new venue in the heart of east London's financial district. The 1,200-seat house sits on Water Street in Wood Wharf, the eastern expansion of the Canary Wharf estate, and opened as the area's first dedicated theatre, a significant step in the district's transformation into a seven-day cultural destination. Operated by Troubadour Theatres in partnership with the Canary Wharf Group and designed by the architects Haworth Tompkins, the building is a fully demountable temporary structure, conceived to be assembled, run for around eight to ten years and then relocated or recycled. It was built using repurposed materials from other Troubadour sites and the wider neighbourhood, following circular-economy principles throughout its construction. Its in-the-round configuration is designed to put spectators in the middle of the action, with technically ambitious staging suited to large-scale, immersive productions. The inaugural Hunger Games adaptation, written by Conor McPherson and directed by Matthew Dunster, began previews on 20 October 2025 and opened on 12 November, with John Malkovich appearing on screen as part of the production. The theatre follows the success of Troubadour's earlier London ventures, including the Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre and the former King's Cross Theatre, which staged acclaimed runs such as The Railway Children and Lin-Manuel Miranda's In the Heights. The model is built to offer producers an affordable, flexible alternative to the West End for bold, blockbuster-scale work. Easily reached by public transport, including by river boat, and set among the shops and restaurants of Canary Wharf, the venue brings large-format theatre to a part of London long associated with offices rather than the stage. Its arrival signals a new approach to ambitious commercial theatre staged outside the traditional Theatreland.
