Designed by John Eberson in his trademark atmospheric style, the Uptown Theater opened on 6 January 1928 as the first notable cinema in Kansas City outside the downtown area. Universal Pictures acquired the partly built shell at 3700 Broadway in 1927 and hired Eberson to complete it, and he created an auditorium evoking a Mediterranean courtyard, with classical arches and columns, seaside views on the side walls and a ceiling of twinkling stars, drifting clouds and, for a time, mechanical birds. Seating around 2,300, the Uptown opened with vaudeville acts, a full orchestra and the film The Irresistible Lover, and over the following decades welcomed stars such as Shirley Temple, Roy Rogers and Bob Hope. During the 1930s it installed an unusual gimmick, a Fragratone system that piped scents through the ventilation to enhance the moviegoing experience, and it operated as both a movie house and live-entertainment centre into the early 1970s. After years of decline and a period of closure, the theatre was bought in 1994 by a local developer who undertook a 15-million-dollar restoration, returning Eberson's decoration and the lobby's original colour scheme to their former glory. The work also added some 33,000 square feet of new lobby, bar, office and banquet space, while reducing the main-floor seating by several hundred to create a flexible area for concerts. Reopened in 1998, the Uptown today holds around 2,400, with permanent seating retained in the balcony and the rear of the main floor and the front portion opened up for tables or general-admission standing. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it remains one of the few surviving atmospheric theatres still in operation and one of the finest restored movie palaces in the Midwest. Now operating as a concert and special-event venue, the Uptown hosts touring music acts, weddings, corporate functions and other gatherings beneath Eberson's starry ceiling. Its restoration also helped spur the wider redevelopment of the Broadway commercial corridor around it, anchoring the Valentine neighbourhood with a piece of 1920s grandeur.
