Vanderbilt Memorial Gym

Dedicated in 1952 as a memorial to the Vanderbilt men and women who served in the Second World War, Memorial Gymnasium is the oldest active basketball venue in the Southeastern Conference and the home court of the Vanderbilt Commodores. Designed by the prolific Nashville architect Edwin Keeble as a combination gymnasium and concert hall, it was named in particular to honour the 144 students who lost their lives in the war. The building's unusual design, which Keeble is said to have drawn from playing basketball in the cramped basement of a Paris YMCA, places the playing court on a raised platform above portions of the crowd, with the team benches set along the baselines rather than the sidelines. Construction began in 1950 and the dedication game was played on 6 December 1952, a Commodore victory over the University of Virginia, in an arena that originally seated 6,583. Built with future growth in mind, the gym was expanded three times: north-side balconies were added in 1965, the south-side balconies known as the ones Clyde Lee built followed in 1967, and seating along the east and west baselines later pushed capacity above 15,000. After chairback seats and suites were installed in the late 1990s the capacity settled at its present 14,316, and a more recent change expanded the student section. The combination of the raised court, baseline benches and famously deafening acoustics has long made Memorial Gymnasium a dreaded stop for visiting teams, and the home-court advantage it creates is known as Memorial Magic. Capacity crowds, an overflowing student section and a lively pep band have helped the Commodores rank among the nation's top attendance draws in both men's and women's basketball. As a combination arena and concert hall in the heart of Music City, the gym has hosted entertainment alongside sport since its construction. More than seventy years after it opened, Keeble's rectangular, four-sided design remains central to Vanderbilt's identity and one of college basketball's most distinctive buildings.
