Built in 1914 as a hall for the Ancient Order of Hibernians, the Wonder Ballroom is a music venue in northeast Portland, Oregon, with a century of community history behind it. The brick building at 128 NE Russell Street was designed by the architecture firm of Jacobberger and Smith for the fraternal organisation, which was committed to immigration reform and the preservation of Irish culture, and held its first meeting in the new Hibernian Hall on 10 September 1914. After the Hibernians' membership declined, the building passed through a series of uses over the following decades, housing the Catholic Youth Organization and the Portland Boxing School, serving an American Legion post during the Second World War, and later becoming a community centre and nursery known eventually as the Collins Center. A 1948 renovation lowered the auditorium ceilings, and further remodelling in the 1950s added windows and brought the building up to code. By 2002 the building had closed, shuttered through deterioration and a lack of funds, before the arts promoters Mark Woolley and Chris Monlux bought it in 2004 and renovated it into the music venue it is today. The following year it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places under its original name, Hibernian Hall, recognised for its historic and architectural significance. The reopened Wonder Ballroom offers an open-floor capacity of 778, reduced to around 450 when chairs are used, in a smoke-free, air-conditioned hall with a full bar that hosts both all-ages and 21-and-over shows. Since reopening it has become a cornerstone of Portland's music scene, drawing national and local acts across genres from indie rock and hip-hop to bluegrass and swing, and supporting visual arts through an on-site gallery. A restored piece of the city's history as much as a concert hall, the venue pairs its eclectic programming with eclectic events such as dance parties and literary nights. More than a century after Irish immigrants built it, the former Hibernian Hall thrives as one of Portland's most distinctive live-music rooms.
