Walpole Park Mattock Lane London W5 5EQ

Laid out in the former grounds of Pitzhanger Manor and opened to the public on 1 May 1901, Walpole Park is a Grade II registered municipal park covering roughly 28 acres in the centre of Ealing, west London. The land had been the country retreat of the architect Sir John Soane, who remodelled the manor house between 1800 and 1804, and the park preserves elements of his designed landscape, including an ornamental lake and mature specimen trees. Ealing District Council bought the estate from the Walpole family at the turn of the twentieth century, giving the park its name, and opened it as one of the borough's flagship green spaces. Today it holds formal walled gardens, a long water feature fed by the old manor moat, sports facilities, a children's playground and the restored Pitzhanger Manor and Gallery, which reopened after a major conservation project in 2019. The park is best known across London as a festival site. For many years it has hosted the Ealing Summer Festivals, a run of weekend events that has at various times included jazz, blues, comedy and global-music programmes, drawing large crowds to the open lawns. A regular farmers market and community events fill the calendar at quieter times of year. For residents it functions as Ealing's principal park; for visitors it pairs a notable piece of architectural heritage with everyday green space, a combination that keeps it busy from early-morning dog walkers to summer festival audiences. Entrances on Mattock Lane and the surrounding streets put it within a short walk of Ealing Broadway. The restored Pitzhanger Manor reopened in 2019 with a programme of contemporary art exhibitions in its adjoining gallery, and the park has held Green Flag status recognising well-managed public green space. A Friends group supports its upkeep, and the grounds form part of a conservation area that protects both the Soane landscape and the surrounding Victorian streets. Regular markets, outdoor theatre and seasonal events keep the lawns in use well beyond the summer festival season.
