02 Academy

With a main hall holding around 3,000 standing and two smaller rooms beneath it, the O2 Academy Birmingham is one of the largest dedicated live-music venues in the city centre. The complex on Horsefair, at the lower end of Bristol Street, brings three interconnected spaces under one roof: the principal Academy, the mid-sized Academy 2 and the club-scale Academy 3, giving a combined capacity approaching 3,900 across simultaneous shows. The venue moved to its present building in September 2009, relocating from the long-running Carling Academy site at Dale End. The current premises had previously operated as the Dome nightclub, and its conversion gave touring promoters a purpose-run concert hall close to the Chinese Quarter and the Hippodrome theatre. It forms part of the Academy Music Group network that runs O2 Academy branded venues across Britain. Programming spans rock, pop, indie, hip-hop, metal and electronic acts, with the three rooms letting the building host arena warm-up shows, club nights and emerging-band bills on the same evening. The stepped floor and balcony in the main hall give clear sightlines, and the venue is a regular fixture on national tour routings that stop in the Midlands. For Birmingham audiences it fills the gap between small pub stages and the city's arenas, and its position on the southern edge of the centre keeps it within walking distance of New Street and the Gay Village. The mix of capacities under a single address makes it a venue many touring artists return to as their following grows. The Academy Music Group that operates the venue is majority-owned by the concert promoter Live Nation, tying the room into one of the largest touring networks in the country. Standing shows in the main hall draw crowds from across the West Midlands, and the building's location near the Arcadian leisure complex and the Hippodrome places it within a busy entertainment quarter. Branding has shifted with sponsorship over the years, from Carling Academy to the present O2 Academy name, but the venue has remained the city's principal mid-scale concert hall.
