Run as a collective by its own membership, the 1 in 12 Club in Bradford is one of Britain's longest-surviving self-managed social centres, organised on anarchist principles of self-management, co-operation and mutual aid. It was formed in 1981 by members of the city's Claimants Union, which took its name from a government figure stating that one in twelve benefit claimants was defrauding the state, and it spent its early years as a nomadic club staging gigs and meetings in the upstairs rooms of pubs. A government grant in 1988 allowed the club to buy a building at 21-23 Albion Street, which members renovated and opened as a permanent home, where it remains today. The conversion took roughly two years of voluntary work, and the words liberty, equality and solidarity painted on the building still mark its founding ideals. Through the 1980s the club became a hub of the UK anarcho-punk and crust scene, hosting bands from across Europe, the United States and Japan, and in the 1990s it was a centre for the country's straight-edge and metalcore scenes. Beyond music it runs a bar, cafe and library, hosts the annual Means to an End punk and hardcore festival, and acts as a base for May Day activities and a range of member-led collectives, from food projects to a football team. Membership, costing only a few pounds a year, is required to attend events, and the club enforces a strict policy against racism, sexism, homophobia and fascism. For visitors it is far more than a venue: a volunteer-run building that has functioned as a community space and underground music institution for over four decades. Members of the band Chumbawamba were among those closely associated with the club in its earlier years, and in 2025, as Bradford held the UK City of Culture title, its history was marked by a project with the Home of Metal organisation that gathered memories, podcasts and exhibitions about its four decades. The building runs over several floors, housing the bar and cafe, a gig room and a library, and remains entirely independent, funded largely by bar takings and the occasional grant rather than commercial backing.
