Set in an 1840s Victorian polish factory on Percy Street, Alder is a bar, brewery and live-music venue in the Neepsend and Kelham Island corner of Sheffield. The redbrick building has had many lives over its 175 years, serving as stables, a Land Rover repair shop, a builder's yard and most recently the Sheffield Brewery, whose mash tuns and fermenters remain visible in the bar's decor. Two friends from nearby Hillsborough took the bar on independently in October 2021, building it into a local favourite within a highly competitive part of the city; it was named Pints of Sheffield's Boozer of the Year in 2022. A gravity-fed brewery still operates on site, alongside a courtyard beer garden that draws sun-seekers in warmer months. The back room runs an eclectic live-music programme, hosting nights from the likes of a blues club, a jazz club and a karaoke club, plus gigs spanning local punk, folk and even algorave. Each May the bar joins neighbouring venues for the area's Get Together Festival. The survival of the brewing kit from the building's most recent industrial use gives the interior an unusual character, with the old vessels woven into a room that doubles as taproom, gig space and community local.
