All Saints Hove

One of the largest churches of the nineteenth-century Gothic revival, All Saints in Hove is a Grade I listed building designed by John Loughborough Pearson in a thirteenth-century French Gothic style. Constructed from Sussex sandstone with a great roof of Sussex oak, it has been nicknamed the cathedral of the back streets and is one of the most significant churches in the city of Brighton and Hove. Building began in 1889; the nave and side aisles opened in 1891 and the eastern end was completed in 1901, while an intended south-western tower was never finished. All Saints became the parish church of Hove in 1892 and has been in continuous use since its consecration, treated as the main church of the town for much of its history. Because the church has no fixed pews, the wide nave can be reconfigured for a variety of layouts, making it a versatile venue for concerts, fashion shows, book launches, award ceremonies, theatre, conferences and dinners. It seats around 250 in its usual arrangement and up to 500 with additional chairs, with vestries, a bar area, pipe organ, grand piano and kitchen available to hirers. It is an important venue for the Brighton Festival and for choral and orchestral concerts, hosting the Sussex Symphony Orchestra, the Brighton Festival Chorus and many other groups, and it runs an annual lunchtime concert season of classical and jazz from June to October. Large civic occasions, including the city's Remembrance services, are also held here. Famous for its late-Victorian stained glass and grand stone interior, the church sits on The Drive in central Hove and is recognised for its architectural importance. For the community it combines an active parish life with a leading role as one of the area's principal concert and event venues. The architect John Loughborough Pearson, also responsible for Truro Cathedral, did not live to see the church completed, and the work was finished by his son Frank. Its scale and the quality of its stonework have led many to regard it as among the finest Victorian churches in the south of England, and its flexible, pew-free interior has kept it in continuous demand for the city's largest concerts and civic gatherings.
