Paisley Town Hall

A grand Neoclassical civic hall reopened in 2023 after a major restoration, Paisley Town Hall has been turned into one of the leading entertainment venues in the west of Scotland. The A-listed Victorian building, dating from 1882, stands at Abbey Close in the heart of the town beside Paisley Abbey, and is now operated by the local charitable trust OneRen. The five-year, 22 million-pound refurbishment, led by Renfrewshire Council, carefully restored the heritage fabric while upgrading the building into a professional performance space. In addition to its main events hall, the project added a dance studio, a cafe-bar, a cinema and wedding and banqueting rooms, with the main hall's capacity increased to around 1,200. Since reopening, the town hall has become Paisley's big stage, hosting a year-round programme of concerts, comedy, theatre and community events. Its early seasons featured performers including the Paisley-born singer Paolo Nutini, comedians Frankie Boyle and John Bishop, and the club night Bicep supported by Optimo, alongside opera, festivals and the Royal National Mod. The venue is also a working civic and events space, available for weddings, conferences and meetings, and in its first year it welcomed tens of thousands of visitors and hosted well over a hundred shows plus more than 200 conferences and meetings. That blend of cultural programming and private hire reflects its role as a flexible, multipurpose hall. The restoration forms part of a wider, generational investment by Renfrewshire Council in the town's cultural venues, alongside projects at Paisley Museum and the arts centre. As a restored landmark now drawing audiences from across Scotland, the town hall combines historic grandeur with a busy modern events calendar. The restoration also reinstated and celebrated the building's historic features, from its clock-tower chimes to its grand interiors, with the reopening event built around the restored chimes. Standing beside Paisley Abbey at the heart of the town, the hall anchors a cluster of heritage buildings, and its return to use has been central to efforts to boost footfall and night-time activity in the town centre.
