Among the most storied names in Belfast's music scene, the Limelight is a live-music and club complex on Ormeau Avenue that has operated, in various forms, since 1987. It now spans two venues, Limelight 1 and Limelight 2, alongside Katy's Bar and an outdoor terrace. The original Limelight nightclub and its neighbouring Dome bar were opened in 1987 by Patrick Lennon, previously of the Harp Bar. Over time the operation expanded into the adjoining former spring-and-airbrake works, which lent its name to a second venue on the site. After the previous owners went into administration in 2010, the complex was bought in 2011 by promoters MCD and Shine Productions, who undertook a major refurbishment. In 2012 the spaces were rebranded, with the old works becoming Limelight 1 and the original room Limelight 2. Across its rooms the complex holds a combined capacity of around 1,675, hosting international touring acts across many genres alongside regular weekly club nights, and serving as a key stop for both established and emerging Northern Irish talent. Its history is studded with notable gigs, including an Oasis show in September 1994 that the band has spoken of fondly, as well as early Belfast appearances by acts such as The Strokes and the Manic Street Preachers. When new owners took over, there were public fears the live-music tradition might be lost, but the venues continued to prioritise gigs. Decades on, the Limelight remains a central pillar of Belfast's music life and a coveted booking for touring bands. Belfast's music scene has produced and hosted a remarkable number of significant acts over the decades, and the Limelight sits at its centre, its walls effectively a record of the city's gig history. Its continued operation under MCD and Shine has tied it into the wider promotion networks that bring major tours to Northern Ireland, while its smaller rooms keep space for local bands to build an audience. For successive generations of Belfast music fans, the Limelight has been both a first gig and a milestone booking.
