The Refinery Bankside

The first venue opened by the hospitality group Drake & Morgan, back in 2008, The Refinery Bankside set the template for the company's polished, all-day bar-restaurants that later spread across London and beyond. It sits in the landmark Blue Fin Building on Southwark Street, immediately behind Tate Modern and a short walk from Borough Market, the River Thames and the London Bridge, Blackfriars and Southwark stations that funnel City and South Bank crowds to its doors. The interior trades on what the group calls industrial sophistication, an open-plan mix of exposed materials and comfortable lounge seating that runs from a cosy snug through the main bar to a long open-plan restaurant. Food is served from breakfast through to late, with seasonal British and contemporary European menus, sharing plates and bar snacks built around organic and well-sourced ingredients, while the drinks list spans classic and seasonal cocktails, global wines and well-kept draught beer. Several distinct areas give the venue flexibility for events, including a semi-private dining space and a mezzanine used for private dinners and cocktail-making classes, with capacity for up to around 450 guests across the building. A large covered terrace, latterly styled as a spritz terrace, wraps the venue and stays usable in most weather, making it a popular spot for after-work drinks and weekend brunch in the warmer months. With a late licence on Thursdays and Fridays and a steady diet of seasonal menus, parties and special events, The Refinery Bankside functions as a destination bar and restaurant rather than a club, anchoring the original end of the Drake & Morgan story. As the original site in what grew into an estate of around eighteen venues, The Refinery Bankside also carries a certain status within the Drake & Morgan group, which continues to use it to showcase the seasonal menus, themed events and design-led styling that define the brand. Its position behind Tate Modern, on a stretch of Southwark Street busy with galleries, offices and South Bank visitors, gives it a steady mix of cultural tourists, corporate bookings and local workers across the week, sustaining trade from breakfast through to its late-licensed evenings.
