The Underground Bradford

Opened in 2016 with the stated aim of bringing live music back to the city, The Underground has become a fixture of Bradford's grassroots and touring gig scene. It occupies a Duke Street building in the city centre that had previously been a venue known as the Gasworks, and its founders set out to fill a gap for rooms of the right size to host rock and metal gigs. Now run as a multi-genre venue with a capacity of around 350, it programmes events most weekends, ranging from rock, metal and punk to soul nights, indie discos, comedy, theatre and community events put on by a variety of local promoters. Over the years its stage has hosted a notable run of names, among them The Wombats, The Twang, UK Subs, Maxi Jazz, Maverick Sabre, Arrested Development and Lucy Spraggan, alongside a steady stream of up-and-coming acts. The venue is equipped with a fully stocked main bar and has added an upstairs Platform Bar offering free entry through the week along with food and cocktails, broadening its appeal beyond gig nights. Practical touches such as two green rooms, a kitchen that hosts pop-up restaurants, seating areas and an outdoor smoking area support both performers and audiences, and the venue offers wheelchair access and a disabled toilet. Championing local talent while drawing touring bands to the district, The Underground has established itself as one of Bradford's key independent music venues, valued for its informal atmosphere and broad, unpredictable programme. Bradford has a long history of rock and metal clubs but has often lacked rooms of the right size to host touring bands, and The Underground was set up specifically to plug that gap in the city's gig circuit. By welcoming new promoters and ideas, from sound-system nights to drag and community events, the venue has kept its programme broad and its doors open to a wide cross-section of the city, and its role in developing local talent has earned it a place in national conversations about the importance of grassroots music venues.
