Tramshed Cardiff

Housed in a Grade II-listed former tram depot in the Cardiff suburb of Grangetown, Tramshed is a large live music and arts venue a short walk south of the city centre. The red-brick buildings were constructed between 1900 and 1902 as the western depot and central workshops of Cardiff Corporation Tramways, serving the city's trams until 1946 and then trolleybuses until 1953. The eleven gabled street facade, each gable carrying a louvred oculus and paired semicircular windows, was listed in 1997 as a rare survivor of a major tramway system. After the trams the site became a council vehicle maintenance depot, a role it kept until 2013, when the buildings were sold for redevelopment. Architects Ellis Williams, who had earlier converted a Gateshead flour mill into the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, drew up plans for a music venue, gallery, studios and workspaces. The 1,000-capacity main room opened in late October 2015, and the wider scheme was formally opened the following year by the First Minister of Wales. The conversion kept the vast internal volume and industrial character of the old depot while adding modern staging, sound and lighting. The main hall hosts touring bands and DJs across indie, rock, hip-hop and electronic music, with a balcony bar adding raised views and a smaller room, the Waiting Room, used for acoustic sets and club nights. A 46-seat cinema sits within the complex alongside the live spaces. Beyond performances, Tramshed runs as a flexible events space for club nights, comedy, conferences, food fairs and private hire, with capacities that scale from a few dozen seated guests to a full standing crowd of a thousand. The building also houses Tramshed Tech, a co-working hub for creative and technology businesses, together with live-work studio apartments, making the restored depot a mixed-use anchor for the surrounding neighbourhood. The venue is now part of the Propaganda Venues group, which also operates XOYO in London and Birmingham and Camden Assembly, and it remains one of the larger dedicated music rooms in the Welsh capital.
