Opened in January 2017, Victoria Gate Casino sits above the Victoria Gate shopping arcade in central Leeds, beside the city's flagship John Lewis store. Operated by Global Gaming Ventures and developed as part of Hammerson's Victoria Gate scheme, the casino was built at a cost of around thirty million pounds and designed to echo the architecture of the surrounding retail development. Spread across three floors and roughly 50,000 square feet, it opened as the largest casino in the north of England and Scotland and, at the time, the third largest in the United Kingdom. The gaming floor holds a capacity of around 1,400 and offers a large poker room, two dozen gaming tables and a substantial bank of electronic gaming terminals and slot machines. Beyond gambling, the venue was conceived as a wider entertainment and hospitality destination, with dining, bars and space for corporate events and large screenings of sport. Its hospitality offer has included a champagne bar, a sports bar and a fine-dining restaurant, giving visitors reasons to stay beyond the gaming tables. The casino was projected to create a significant number of jobs and to add to the night-time economy of a city-centre quarter already anchored by premium retail. Marketed at its launch as the north's first super casino, it remains one of the larger and more prominent gaming venues outside London. The casino forms the leisure anchor of the wider Victoria Gate development, an upmarket retail quarter that reshaped the eastern edge of Leeds city centre and houses the largest John Lewis store outside London. Designed to draw visitors in the evening as well as during shopping hours, it extended the quarter's appeal into the night-time economy, combining gaming with dining, drinking and event space under one roof, and operates under one of the large casino licences among the most extensive permitted in the country.
