Victoria Park

Opened in 1845, Victoria Park is one of London's oldest public parks, covering around 86 hectares across the East End boroughs of Tower Hamlets and the edge of Hackney. Often called the People's Park, it was created by Act of Parliament in response to petitions for green space to improve the health of the densely populated East End, and was laid out by the architect Sir James Pennethorne in the mid-1840s. From the outset it was conceived as a place of recreation for working Londoners, and it became a focus for public meetings and political gatherings through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The park combines broad tree-lined avenues, ornamental lakes, formal planting and open grassland, with features added over the decades including drinking fountains, a bandstand and play areas. It has a long association with live music and large events, most famously the Rock Against Racism carnival of 1978 headlined by The Clash, which drew tens of thousands to the park. In recent years it has been a major festival site, hosting the All Points East series and, historically, events such as Lovebox and Field Day, with temporary stages set up in the warmer months. For most of the year it functions as a everyday neighbourhood park, used for walking, cycling, running and family outings, and is dog-friendly across much of its grounds. A major restoration in the 2010s renewed many of its historic features, helping it remain one of the best-loved and most heavily used green spaces in east London. Within its grounds are boating and model-boat lakes, a Chinese-style pagoda, fountains, lawns and play areas serving the surrounding neighbourhoods, alongside cafes and a network of paths. The park is split into eastern and western halves by Grove Road, and its proximity to the Regent's Canal and Hertford Union Canal links it into a wider web of green and waterside routes across east London, reinforcing its role as an everyday refuge as much as a major events site.
