Opened in February 2007 by the then president Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the ADNEC Centre Abu Dhabi is the largest exhibition and convention venue in the Middle East, on Khaleej Al Arabi Street in the capital. Designed by the international architecture firm RMJM, the centre offers more than 150,000 square metres of combined indoor and outdoor event space, built to host major trade shows, conferences and public exhibitions. At its core sit a series of interconnected exhibition halls, supported by an atrium and concourse, two conference halls and a large bank of meeting rooms for events of every scale. The venue's auditorium, the ICC, seats around 6,000 people, providing a major stage for conferences, ceremonies and large gatherings. A striking 162-metre pedestrian footbridge, completed in 2009, spans the multi-lane Khaleej Al Arabi road to link the halls with a waterfront marina zone. The later Marina Hall added a 10,000-square-metre space able to stage showcases both on land and on the water, a rarity among exhibition centres. Several on-site hotels offering around 1,800 rooms, multiple dining outlets, on-site airport check-in and retail make the complex a self-contained destination for event organisers and visitors. Within its first operating year the centre sharply increased the number of major exhibitions staged in Abu Dhabi, and it has since established itself among the leading event venues in the region. Among the major events the centre regularly hosts are the IDEX defence exhibition, the ADIPEC energy conference and the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair, drawing exhibitors and delegates from around the world. The complex is closely associated with the adjacent Capital Gate, the dramatically leaning tower that forms part of the wider ADNEC precinct. Its scale, transport links and on-site hotels have helped Abu Dhabi grow as a destination for international business tourism and large-scale conventions.
