Carved out of the desert as a series of man-made lakes, Al Qudra is a popular outdoor escape within the Al Marmoom Conservation Reserve in Dubai's Saih Al Salam desert. Created to promote eco-tourism, the lakes turned a stretch of bare desert into a thriving oasis of open water, reeds and planting that quickly became a favourite weekend retreat for residents. The wider Al Qudra Lakes are made up of several interconnected pools, drawing flamingos, swans, ducks and other wildlife, with gazelles and oryx ranging across the surrounding dunes. A later addition, Love Lake, opened in 2018 and is formed of two large interlocking heart-shaped lakes, with planting that spells out a message visible from the air and a track running around the perimeter. The area is closely tied to the Al Qudra cycle track, a dedicated asphalt route of around 86 kilometres with loops for both beginners and experienced riders, free of motor traffic. Camping, picnics, birdwatching and photography are all popular, and the dark desert skies make it a well-known spot for stargazing. Nearby facilities include a food-truck park, a mosque, a shop and bike rental, supporting the steady flow of visitors heading out from the city. Free to access and open around the clock, the lakes have become one of Dubai's best-loved natural retreats, especially in the cooler months. A short distance away, the Last Exit food-truck park provides casual dining, while the desert resort of Bab Al Shams lies within the wider area for those wanting to extend a visit. The final approach to some of the lakes is over compacted sand, so visitors are often advised to take care in low cars and to avoid driving onto soft dunes. Early mornings and evenings are the most popular times, both for cooler temperatures and for the birdlife and sunsets that have made the lakes a favourite subject for photographers.
