Battersea Power Station

A Grade II-listed former coal-fired power station on the south bank of the Thames, Battersea Power Station reopened in 2022 as a shopping, dining and leisure destination in the Nine Elms district of London. The brick building was raised in two phases from the 1930s, its four white chimneys becoming one of the most recognisable shapes on the city's skyline before the plant was decommissioned in 1983. It stood derelict for decades, familiar from film and album artwork, until a major regeneration restored the structure and opened it to the public for the first time. The vast Turbine Halls now house shops and restaurants, while preserved control rooms and industrial details are woven through the retail floors. A standout attraction is Lift 109, a glass lift that rises through one of the chimneys to a viewing platform high above the river and city. Beyond shopping and dining, the development holds offices, including a major technology campus, alongside apartments, event spaces and a riverside park. A dedicated extension of the Underground network and river boat services connect the site to central London. The mix of heritage architecture, retail and leisure has turned a long-idle landmark into one of the city's newer destinations on the riverside. The building has long been a cultural touchstone, appearing on a famous album cover and in numerous films, which adds to the appeal of seeing its interior open at last. The four chimneys were taken down and faithfully rebuilt during the works, preserving the silhouette that defines the skyline here. A dedicated Underground station and a river-bus pier link the site to central London, and its event spaces, cinema and riverside park give visitors reasons to come beyond shopping alone. Seasonal events, markets and light installations now draw regular crowds, helping the regenerated landmark establish itself in the city's calendar.
