Opened in 1888 on Shaftesbury Avenue, the Lyric Theatre is the oldest surviving theatre on that famous West End thoroughfare in London. It stands in the heart of the theatreland district around Piccadilly Circus. The theatre was designed by the prolific theatre architect C.J. Phipps and built for the impresario Henry Leslie, funded in part by the profits of a hit comic opera. Its ornate auditorium has been restored and preserved over the years. Arranged over several levels, the auditorium seats roughly 900 people across stalls, dress circle, upper circle and balcony. The relatively intimate scale brings audiences close to the stage. Over its long history the Lyric has staged a wide range of work, from opera and drama to long-running musicals and comedies.
