The first newly built theatre in London's West End in around fifty years, sohoplace opened in 2022 at the corner of Soho, beside Tottenham Court Road station. It was developed as part of a major regeneration around the station and Soho Place, bringing a purpose-built playhouse to a district long associated with theatre and nightlife. The auditorium seats around 600 and is designed to be flexible, able to stage productions in the round, in a thrust configuration or end-on as required. That adaptability set it apart from the older proscenium houses of the West End, allowing directors to use the space in ways the historic theatres cannot easily match. Since opening it has staged a mix of new plays, revivals and musicals, quickly establishing itself as a notable addition to central London's theatre map. Modern front-of-house areas, step-free access and contemporary stage technology reflect its status as a twenty-first-century build rather than a restored Victorian house. Its location directly above a major Underground and Elizabeth line interchange makes it one of the easiest West End theatres to reach by public transport. By marrying an intimate, reconfigurable auditorium with a prime Soho address, the theatre has positioned itself for ambitious, star-led productions in the heart of the city. The in-the-round and thrust layouts place the audience close to the action on several sides, an arrangement rare in the West End and one that producers have used to stage intimate, character-driven work. Backed by a commercial producer and named in part after its Soho Place address, the theatre arrived as the centrepiece of a wider development that reshaped the area around the station. In a district synonymous with entertainment for more than a century, it has given the West End a genuinely modern stage, capable of drawing high-profile casts to a flexible space in a way the older houses sometimes struggle to.
