Arènes de Lutèce

One of the oldest surviving structures in Paris, the Arenes de Lutece is a Gallo-Roman amphitheatre whose remains lie in the Latin Quarter, in the 5th arrondissement. It dates from around the 1st century AD, when the city was the Roman settlement of Lutetia. In its complete form the amphitheatre was a large oval arena that could hold many thousands of spectators, used for combat and for stage performances, an unusual combination of functions in a single building. A raised stage and tiers of seating once surrounded the central ground. The structure fell out of use and was gradually buried and built over as the city changed, with stone reused in later defences and construction. For centuries its existence was known mainly from old accounts rather than visible remains. It was rediscovered in the 19th century during the cutting of the Rue Monge and associated building works. A public campaign to save and excavate the site followed, supported by figures including the writer Victor Hugo, and parts of the arena were uncovered and preserved. What survives today includes sections of the terraced seating and the arena floor, partly reconstructed, set within a quiet garden reached through a passage from the surrounding streets. The space is open to the public without charge. Rather than being fenced off as a ruin, the arena is used as a neighbourhood square, where local people play football and the traditional bowls game of boules on the old arena ground, and children gather in the surrounding garden. This everyday use, in the middle of a dense quarter, gives the monument an unusual character among Roman remains, combining an ancient site with an ordinary public park. Together with the nearby baths preserved at the Cluny museum, it is one of the few tangible reminders of the Roman city that preceded medieval and modern Paris.
