Spread across an area the size of a small city, the Walt Disney World Resort is one of the most visited holiday destinations on earth. The resort sits on land bought up quietly in the 1960s, giving it room to grow far beyond its original park. Much of that land remains undeveloped as conservation areas and woodland. It has its own governing arrangements, services and infrastructure, functioning almost as a self-contained district. Visitors arrive from around the world, and nearby Orlando has grown into a major holiday hub around it.
