Walt Disney World® Resort

Spread across an area the size of a small city, the Walt Disney World Resort is one of the most visited holiday destinations on earth. It draws tens of millions of visitors each year to its parks, hotels and entertainment. The resort opened in 1971 with a single theme park, and has grown steadily ever since into a vast world of its own. It covers tens of square kilometres of central Florida near the city of Orlando. Today it is made up of four large theme parks, two water parks, dozens of hotels and a busy shopping and dining district. Each park has its own character, from a fairy-tale kingdom to a celebration of nature and the future. The first park, the Magic Kingdom, was joined over the years by a park exploring science and the nations of the world, one based on the movies, and one devoted to wildlife and conservation. Together they offer hundreds of attractions. The resort runs its own roads, transport and services, with buses, boats and an overhead monorail linking the parks and hotels. It was planned from the start as a self-contained destination. Visitors often stay for several days or more, moving between the parks, water parks and resort hotels without leaving the property. Careful planning helps families make the most of the many attractions. Special events fill the calendar through the year, from seasonal festivals to night-time fireworks and parades. The resort is one of the largest single-site employers in the United States. It lies a short distance from Orlando, in the warm, flat country of central Florida. The resort sits on land bought up quietly in the 1960s, giving it room to grow far beyond its original park. Much of that land remains undeveloped as conservation areas and woodland. It has its own governing arrangements, services and infrastructure, functioning almost as a self-contained district. Visitors arrive from around the world, and nearby Orlando has grown into a major holiday hub around it.
