Greenwich Pier

Set beside a famous tea clipper on the bank of the Thames, Greenwich Pier is the river gateway to the historic town of Greenwich. From here boats set off up and down the river, carrying visitors and commuters alike. The pier lies on the south bank of the river, in front of the grand old buildings of Greenwich. It has long served as a landing place for those arriving by water. Beside it stands the Cutty Sark, a 19th-century sailing ship that once raced home with cargoes of tea from the East. The ship is now preserved as a museum. River boats call at the pier throughout the day, linking Greenwich with the centre of the city and with attractions downstream. Fast services and leisure cruises both use it. Arriving at Greenwich by boat offers fine views of the riverside buildings as they come into sight. Many visitors choose to travel one way by water. From the pier it is a short walk to the old naval college, the maritime museum and the park rising behind. The pier is a natural starting point for a visit. A foot tunnel beneath the river, reached nearby, links Greenwich to the far bank, an unusual way to cross the Thames. Its round entrance buildings stand close to the pier. The riverside around the pier is lined with pubs, cafes and shops, busy with visitors enjoying the views. The setting is one of the most attractive on the river. Boat trips from the pier offer a relaxing way to see the changing face of London from the water. Guides often point out landmarks along the banks. The pier thus serves both as a transport link and as the threshold to one of the city's most historic quarters. It is rarely without activity. It stands on the riverside at Greenwich, beside the Cutty Sark, in south-east London. Whether as a starting point for a river cruise or simply a place to watch the boats come and go, the pier is a lively spot on the waterfront. The views across the water and along the riverside make it a pleasant place to linger before or after a trip.
