One of the oldest public parks in Belfast, Ormeau Park spreads its lawns, trees and paths along the bank of the river to the south of the city centre. It has been a green retreat for the people of the city for over a century. The park was opened in the 1870s on the former grounds of a great house, when the city was growing fast and parks were laid out for the health and pleasure of the people. It was among the first of its kind in the city. The land had once been the demesne of a noble family, whose mansion gave the park its name. Traces of the old estate survive among the newer planting. Broad lawns and avenues of mature trees give the park a stately air, while quieter corners offer shade and calm. The old trees are among its chief glories. The park holds playing fields, courts and greens for many sports, long used by clubs and schools of the surrounding districts. Cricket and other games have been played here for generations. Paths wind through the grounds, used by walkers, runners and cyclists, and the park is a popular spot for a stroll at any season. It draws families and dog walkers daily. A play area and open spaces make the park a favourite with children and families, busy on fine weekends. There is room for games and picnics on the grass. The river runs along one side of the park, adding to the sense of being away from the city despite the closeness of the streets. Birds gather along the water. Events and gatherings are held in the park through the year, from fairs to sporting fixtures, drawing crowds into the green space. The lawns make a fine setting. Avenues of trees, some planted when the park was new, form shaded walks that are at their finest in autumn. The changing colours draw photographers. As one of the largest green spaces near the centre, the park is much valued by the people of the surrounding neighbourhoods. It offers room to breathe in a busy quarter. It lies off the Ormeau Road, on the south-eastern side of Belfast, beside the river and within easy reach of the centre. The gates open onto the surrounding streets. For city dwellers and visitors alike it offers a long-loved patch of green by the river.
