A derelict 1970s bank headquarters on Brunkebergstorg - the brutalist former home of Swedbank - became one of Stockholm's most talked-about hotels when At Six opened on 23 March 2017. Petter Stordalen's Nordic Hotels & Resorts bought the abandoned building in 2014 as part of a master plan to revive the once-glamorous square; White Arkitekter restored the listed facade and added three new floors, and London's Universal Design Studio spent two years reworking the interior into a 343-room art and design hotel. Art is the organising idea. Working with curator Sune Nordgren, the owners assembled a museum-grade contemporary collection spread across ten floors, including works by Olafur Eliasson, Sol LeWitt, Richard Long, Tacita Dean, Julian Opie, Spencer Finch and Marijke van Warmerdam alongside Swedish artists Dawid and Kristina Matousch. The signature piece greets guests on the lobby's white-granite staircase: a 2.5-metre marble female head in Almeria marble by Catalan sculptor Jaume Plensa. The 343 rooms and roughly 40 suites - up to a top-floor Masterpiece suite with a private terrace and 270-degree views - pair oak parquet, marble desks and bespoke furniture and lighting from Scandinavian makers with a moody palette of greys, sawn stone and blackened steel that softens the building's brutalist bones. Food and drink range from a brasserie and cocktail bar to a serious wine bar, while the adjacent rooftop destination TAK, with cuisine overseen by chef Frida Ronge, adds sweeping views over the capital. A gym, wellness facilities and 2,000 square metres of meeting and event space complete the offer. The location could hardly be more central: Brunkebergstorg lies a couple of minutes' walk from Gustav Adolfs torg, the Royal Opera and the Kungstradgarden and T-Centralen metro stations, with Gamla Stan just across the water.
