Babel Night club

Malmo's most danced-in church stands on Spangatan: a red-brick former church building that reopened in September 2008 as Babel, a combined concert hall, nightclub and culture house that quickly styled itself the city's "partykyrka" (party church). It rose from the ashes of the culture house Jeriko, whose bar and club operators had long dreamed of an internationally credible concert and club room for a music-hungry audience; during the conversion the entire sound and light rig was replaced to match that ambition. The booking policy aims for quality and breadth, both geographically and across genres. Through Babel and its Jeriko-era predecessor clubs, the team has brought names such as Trentemoller, Fever Ray, Lykke Li, Raphael Saadiq, Cut Copy, 2manyDJs, Booka Shade, Theo Parrish, Andrew Weatherall, Carl Craig, Lisa Ekdahl and Jamie Woon to Malmo, and the weekend club nights sweep from soul and disco through techno, electro and pop. Stand-up comedy and other stage arrangements fill out the calendar. The building offers about 600 square metres of floor, flexible enough for standing club crowds or seated events, and is regularly hired for corporate parties, film screenings, conferences and private celebrations - clients have included Sony Ericsson, Nike, Toyota, Sveriges Radio and the City of Malmo. Its location a few blocks from Mollevangstorget puts it in the middle of the city's densest nightlife district. Babel works with leading Swedish and international booking and production companies, and its weekly programme of concerts and club nights reaches a broad audience that has kept the old church at the front of Malmo nightlife for over fifteen years. The Jeriko inheritance did not vanish with the rebuild: the culture associations Jazz i Malmo and MixMusik moved their offices out but kept staging concerts in the church, keeping a thread of the old house's programming alive. On the technical side the renovation delivered an international-class PA for both live and club music plus a light rig of moving heads, lasers and projections - infrastructure that lets the same room host a seated jazz audience one night and a packed techno floor the next.
