Biblioteket Live

Inaugurated in 1939 and now heritage-listed, Medborgarhuset on Medborgarplatsen has been a stage for some of Sweden's most prominent cultural figures; today its glass-roofed atrium and surrounding rooms house Biblioteket Live, a combined restaurant, bar and event venue in the heart of Sodermalm. Event guests often enter from the back of the building at Folkungagatan 43, the address under which many club nights are announced. By day the kitchen serves weekday lunches and an evening menu that runs from fresh oysters and vendace-roe pinsas to grilled signature dishes like plank steak of beef fillet and the chef's shared grill platter. As the evening progresses the historic rooms shift character toward cocktails, DJs and live acts. The venue side is built around several distinct spaces: Ljusgarden, the dramatic glass-ceilinged courtyard used for concerts, club nights, product launches and banquets for several hundred guests, and smaller rooms such as Arkivet for boardroom meetings, workshops and private dinners. Modern staging and technology have been integrated into the 1930s architecture, making the house a regular home for everything from supper clubs and Halloween parties to corporate conferences. The green metro line to Medborgarplatsen stops practically at the door, with buses and the Folkungagatan night-life strip immediately around the corner. The club side runs largely through guest promoters, and the house has become a fixture for Stockholm's themed party crews - Halloween blowouts, hip-hop premieres and dinner clubs rotate through the light court, typically with a 20-plus age limit on big nights (18 with advance tickets in some cases) and costume prizes, guest artists and DJ line-ups pushing capacity. Between the big nights the venue trades on its history: the walls of the 1939 building have hosted generations of Swedish cultural figures, and the mix of heritage-listed architecture, modern staging and a full restaurant kitchen makes it one of Sodermalm's most flexible rooms - equally at home hosting a corporate conference on a Tuesday and a packed dance floor on Friday.
