Børnenes Kontor

Buy a hot dog at the wagon on Bispetorvet and the profit goes to children in need - that has been the deal in Aarhus since 1949. The polsevogn by the cathedral square is one of eight sausage kiosks owned by Bornenes Kontor ("The Children's Office"), a humanitarian organisation founded on 2 March 1944 to give disadvantaged Aarhus children a more dignified and joyful life. The model is distinctive: each wagon is owned by the charity but run by an independent leaseholder with their own business registration, paying a monthly fee that funds the organisation's entire operation. All sponsorships and donations pass through untouched to the charitable work - holiday camps for children aged 8-12 whose families cannot afford a summer holiday, Christmas help with food and gifts for hundreds of families, and support for women and children at the Aarhus crisis centre and families at TrygFonden's Familiehus in Skejby. The charity insists on quality across its wagons - classic Danish sausages and the traditional trimmings - and the kiosks dot the city centre at spots including Banegaardspladsen, Radhuspladsen, the pedestrian street by Salling, Lille Torv and this one on Bispetorvet by the cathedral. Grabbing a "rod med brod" here is as local an Aarhus experience as they come, with the rare bonus that the change does some good. The organisation grew out of a March 1943 meeting at Folkets Hus called by committee chairman Christian Nielsen, moved by the living conditions of the city's poorest children. In its early decades it ran its own holiday colony at Ajstrup Strand, bought after a major gift from director Hjalmar Nielsen and used heavily until the mid-1970s. The wagons were staffed by the charity's own employees until 1995, when operation shifted to the leaseholder model used today; lease income has run to roughly 1.2 million kroner a year, leaving several hundred thousand for the charitable work after site rents and maintenance, on top of donations that pass through in full. The newest wagon, a modern kiosk on Banegaardspladsen by the railway station, was inaugurated in 2018 after years of planning - a new look, but the same Danish quality sausages.
