Brewhouse and kitchen

Trams on the Highbury-to-Aldwych route were once stabled in this building just off Highbury Corner, and the house-brewed bitter called Tramshed keeps the memory alive. Today the old shed at 2a Corsica Street, two minutes from Highbury & Islington station, is Brewhouse & Kitchen Highbury - a brewpub with its own working microbrewery on the floor, part of the UK's largest brewpub group. The site has been a pub since 1997, trading under names including Tramshed and Junction before Brewhouse & Kitchen acquired it in 2014 and reopened it in June 2015, thoroughly refurbished and with the in-house brewery installed - the chain's second brewpub in London. Core and seasonal beers are brewed on site and unique to the pub, with cask and keg offered in third-pint measures and taster flights for the curious; more than 50 craft beers, a long gin list and a beer-matched food menu round things out. Beer education is part of the offer: Brewery Experience Days and masterclasses let guests spend a day brewing with the resident brewer. The space also works for functions, with the Tramshed area seating 60 (100 standing), a lower brewery area and a snug, plus a beer garden for warmer months. On Arsenal home matchdays entry can be controlled with doormen at the front - the Emirates is a short walk away, and the pub fills fast. The building's pub history is a tour of the modern trade: opened in 1997 by Regent Inns, it traded as Junction and later as Tramshed, passed to Spirit under the Bar Room Bar brand, and from 2006 belonged to Orchid until that group went into administration - at which point the growing Brewhouse & Kitchen chain stepped in. The group's model is the same across its houses: a resident brewer, a core range plus seasonal specials brewed on the premises and found nowhere else, and beer treated as something to teach as well as sell. Third-pint measures and tasting flights lower the bar to exploring the range, and the kitchen's menu is written with beer pairings in mind.
