Copenhagen Architecture Forum

Architecture gets treated as public culture, not trade business, at Halmtorvet 27 in Copenhagen's Meatpacking District. The address is the event and exhibition space of Copenhagen Architecture Forum (CAFx), a non-profit founded in 2014 by Josephine Michau that explores how architecture shapes lives and cities through exhibitions, film screenings, debates, talks and city walks - the organisation also runs the Copenhagen Architecture Biennial and grew out of what began as the Copenhagen Architecture Festival, one of northern Europe's most influential platforms for architecture communication. Since 2022 CAFx has shared the Vesterbro premises with Art Hub Copenhagen, and the two institutions co-produce lecture series and seminars on art and architecture in public space - sustainability, communities, diversity and democratic urban development are recurring themes. The house programme moves from conversations with leading international architects to exhibitions in the main space and the window gallery, guided by annual themes; recent years have brought programmes on time and "slowing down" overheated cities, exhibitions on regenerative building practice, and talks pairing architects with biologists and philosophers. CAFx is a member of the European LINA platform under Creative Europe and is backed by the City of Copenhagen, Realdania and the Danish Arts Foundation. Most events are open to the public, many free, announced through cafx.dk; the location sits among the restaurants and galleries of Kodbyen, a short walk from Copenhagen Central Station. The organisation's flagship formats bookend the year: the annual public programme centred on the Halmtorvet space, and the Copenhagen Architecture Biennial, which in 2025 ran under the theme "Slow Down", investigating architecture as a means of cooling overheated sites, cities and societies. Between them, CAFx has built a reputation for making the built environment debatable for non-architects - from housing shortage and climate adaptation to the democracy of planning.
