Culture House - Inner City
click to manage
An old tram depot between the lakes and Nansensgade now runs as one of Copenhagen's most self-sufficient culture houses - literally: Kulturhuset Indre By is a self-service house where users scan their health card at the door and let themselves in, staff or no staff, from early morning until 23:00 most days. Inside, the mix is broad. Salen, the main hall, has a proper stage with sound and light rigs and takes 200 standing or 160 seated for theatre, concerts, talks, yoga, dance and conferences; around it sit two sports halls with three courts for badminton, basketball, volleyball and floorball, two music rehearsal rooms, meeting rooms and a cafe that opens around events. Rooms and courts are booked by the hour through the municipal BookByen system at citizen-friendly rates, and the first-floor Nyttehaven room hosts the volunteer lawyers' free legal aid on fixed weekdays. The square out front, Charlotte Ammundsens Plads, was inaugurated in 2008 as an urban street plaza with skateboarding, basketball and white rock formations to lounge on - effectively an outdoor extension of the house. The previous incarnation of the institution was the Indre By community centre in Ahlefeldtsgade; today's house sits in the Nansensgade quarter a few minutes from Norreport station, run by the City of Copenhagen's culture administration.
