Fenaknoken

Cured leg of lamb hangs from the ceiling and the counter runs deep with pinnekjott, rakfisk and farmhouse cheeses at Fenaknoken, Oslo's specialist shop for traditional Norwegian food culture on the Akershusstranda waterfront below Akershus Fortress. Named after the fenalar knuckle itself, the shop built its reputation over decades at Tordenskiolds gate before moving to the harbour-front premises at Akershusstranda 23. The philosophy is quality and tradition as hard criteria: the owners visit every producer themselves before stocking their goods, assembling the best of Norwegian spekemat - cured meats, fenalar, sausages, flatbread and regional cheeses - supplemented by a few continental indulgences such as pata negra and Parma ham. Alongside retail, Fenaknoken serves cured-meat plates to eat on the spot, making it a favoured lunch stop on the fortress walk, and handles catering and bespoke menus for private tables and events. For visitors it doubles as an edible museum of the Norwegian larder - staff are famously happy to talk food and offer tastes - and around Christmas it becomes a pilgrimage site for pinnekjott and other seasonal staples. Open Monday to Saturday from mid-morning to early evening; the wharf-side location sits between the ferry piers of Radhusbrygga and the fortress gates.
