Author talks several evenings a week make this small bookshop on Stockholm's oldest boulevard punch far above its floor space. Gamla Stans Bokhandel sits at Stora Nygatan 7 - the 17th-century parade street of the Old Town - a stone's throw from the Royal Palace, selling a hand-picked mix of contemporary bestsellers, serious non-fiction and an unusually large English-language section; the stated filter is simply books that make the world "wiser and more fun". The shop opened in autumn 2016 and was relaunched in late 2018 under the publisher Volante, with bookseller Helena Landberg building an event machine unusual for a shop this size: some 200 programme points in the first year alone - author breakfasts, evening conversations, signings and book salons on a small stage with 45 chairs, intimate enough that the audience dares raise a hand. Guests have ranged across Sweden's literary establishment, and pandemic-era outdoor signings on the cobbles became a neighbourhood fixture. It is deliberately not a shop for bulk crime paperbacks or stationery - current non-fiction is the backbone - and the space can be hired for release parties, book circles and small conferences. Open weekdays 11:00-18:00, it makes a natural stop between the Royal Palace and the cafes of Vasterlanggatan, with Gamla Stan metro a few minutes away.
